about

Previously unreleased '90s machine music from Yorkshire's Mx.Tactful (plus two bonus edits from Lara David [f.k.a. chekov])

Hyperkinetic Techno from the Margins

Some words from Lara David:

"Last year, I moved back to the small town where I grew up and soon found myself back at the dole office. While trying to ignore my surroundings, I clocked the lady waiting next to me was also wearing an Autechre tee; our eyes locked in a way that any cosmic freak knows well and holds close.

Welfare bureaucracy behind us, we grabbed a coffee and got to neeking over beats. She hinted at having written music in the '90s; though firmly in the past-tense. A few hangs later, she showed me what was on those dusty DATs and my mind promptly melted...

Eventually, I convinced her to send me the recordings and we went over them together in my ‘studio’. These sessions turned out to be the last push I needed to launch the label I'd been mulling over.

With Mx.Tactful's blessing, it seemed these mislaid machine jams would be a perfect introduction to the wobbly world of Table Jelly :)"

Some words from Mx.Tactful:

"I wrote these tracks across '97-'98 after 'Chiastic Slide' and 'LP5' warped my fried little mind. I tried and failed to copy those sounds on my fisherprice synths, but was pretty chuffed with what came out.

Nobody else seemed to agree. I sent demo tapes to a few labels I was into but no-one ever got back to me.

Feeling whatever, my machines found dust and I slid back to the margins. A few years later I sold them all to buy a second-hand micra that broke down the same month, and so ended my time as a fux-funk-provocateuse.

Screefays and I lost touch around the same time after we had met in ‘98 at an empty EBM night in Teesside; we had both run out of speed so naturally made fast acquaintance. With each other’s ears chewed, we soon put tinfoil to speaker and out came ‘Drummitape’. Last I heard, he was selling singing fish and makina CDs out the back of a Boro pub.

Dive in deep and keep this for the freaks.”
